A big week of selling oncluded on the Gold Coast with the final day of the Patinack Farm Complete Dispersal held in conjunction with the Spring Thoroughbred Sale for Magic Millions.
Star galloper Hooked topped the day’s selling at $600,000. He remained in the Randwick stables of John Thompson and was sold inabsentia as he prepares for a start in Saturday’s Group One Epsom Handicap at Randwick.
Over $6.5 million was traded today to bring the total grossed at the complex for three sales over four days at $41,976,000. The Patinack Farm Complete Dispersal Sale grossed $33,944,500.
Today’s highlight lot Hooked was purchased for $600,000 by Ultra Thoroughbred Racing and will remain with John Thompson and race in their familiar colours on Saturday.
“The horse was purchased by Ultra Thoroughbred Racing and will race in our colours in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday,” Ultra’s Sean Buckley reported.
“Ultra’s Mr Chong will be the majority shareholder and some others will be joining the syndicate.”
“John Thompson will continue to train Hooked for the remainder of his racetrack career. He’s done a tremendous job with the horse and we hope for great success into the future.”
Thompson said he was looking forward to Saturday’s race.
“I’m very happy to get Hooked to train into the future,” he said. “He’s a last start group winner and he will be running in some big races in the next two or three starts.”
“Other options in the future for him could be the Emirates or even the Railway in Perth,” Thompson noted.
The second top seller of the day was another last start winner, this time the Randwick victor Reflectance.
The tremendously bred galloper attracted interest from a number of parties but when the hammer fell the bid was held by McMc Pty Ltd’s Richard Bayliss at $330,000.
Bayliss said Reflectance would be joining the stables of former Geelong footy star and now Bunbury trainer Mark Bairstow and be set for Perth’s Summer Carnival.
Earlier in the day the Manduro-Endless filly was purchased by Darren Smith for $260,000. The filly is closely related to champion international entire Frankel.
Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said he was delighted with the way the three sales had unfolded over the past four days.
“There’s been plenty said about the strength of this sale and just to re-iterate it would be close to pound for pound, dollar for dollar the most successful sale I’ve been involved with.”
“The highlight of the sale was the logistics and conduct by Ben Lawrence and Ross McRobert of Patinack Farm and our own David Houston and Stephanie Watkins and all staff involved.”
“The week of parades went without a hitch, the horses looked fantastic and the feedback across the board was astounding,” Cox added.
“The strength of the sale can be directly attributed to the efforts of all staff and it proves yet again that if Magic Millions is given the job we will deliver beyond expectations.”
